GLADSTONE
The Gladstone Region, particularly in the shires of Calliope and Miriam Vale, has several impressive National Parks which add four wheel driving and camping to visitor options in the area.
Kroombit Tops, as with Mt Larcom, is clearly visible from many parts of the region. The spectacular cliffs of the eastern escarpment are a particularly prominent landmark. Kroombit Tops is, in fact, a large plateau cloaked by a dense and diverse forest flora which together with the ragged sandstone topography gives rise to spectacular scenery.
Of the many contrasts evident between Kroombit and the surrounding lowlands, the existence of the lush rainforest vegetation is the most dramatic. Visitors are required to obtain a permit from the nearest Forestry Office and to "take" out all that is "brought in" is the philosophy promoted in the National Parks.
Mt Castletower National Park lies at the base of Lake Awoonga with its impressive granite outcrop and rugged terrain. There are no developed tracks or camping grounds but the park is suitable for experienced walk-in" campers and again, a permit must be obtained before camping.
Deepwater
and Eurimbula National Parks, in the Miriam Vale Shire,
both have camping grounds. The contrasts of open eucalypt and
paperbark forest, lush rainforest, and the quiet beaches make
the ideal backdrop
for enthusiasts of camping, canoeing, birdwatching, bush walking
and
four wheel driving. Gazetted in 1988 to protect an outstanding
sample of coastal vegetation and landscape, Deepwater National
Park includes
a 9km frontage of the beach.
