FRASER ISLAND TOUR

If you have time to discover new places and tackle adventures at your own pace, a motoring holiday can open up new worlds... Drive around the Fraser Coast and South Burnett and watch numerous diverse attractions unfold, or take a tour with one of the experienced tour operators from Fraser Island.

Fraser Island Explorer Tour

Conducted scenic tours of Fraser Island in 4WD coaches depart every morning. There are one, two and three day tours and 4WD coach connections from Hervey Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Rainbow Beach every day.

Sailing or cruising is just magic in this undiscovered paradise where nature is King. You can bareboat charter a yacht, sailing catamaran, houseboat or pleasure cruiser. Dugong, turtles, dolphins, sea eagles, pelicans and other creatures share these unique and peaceful anchorages where you can truly unwind.

Fraser Island is strictly 4WD vehicle territory, with the surf beach its main north south highway. The main road across the island runs from the Fraser Venture ferry landing at Wanggoolba Creek on the west coast to Eurong Beach on the east coast. Ferries depart every day to Fraser Island from River Heads, (VIA Maryborough and Hervey Bay) and (Rainbow Beach VIA Gympie).

Fraser Island 4WD and Permits

Geographically, the Fraser Island region is ideal for a self-drive tour, with the luxury of stopping where you like, for as long as you like. Fraser Island is strictly four-wheel-driving territory. Seventy-Five Mile Beach is an actual highway that runs up the surf side of the island. Four-wheel-drives share the highway with Air Fraser planes making joy flights. Sand tracks cross the island linking lakes and rainforests.

Driving conditions vary with weather and tides. Speed limits are 35kmh on inland roads and 80kmh on the Seventy-Five Mile Beach. Normal road rules apply. Carry essential spares as well as a towrope, spade, water and first aid kit.

On the beach drive around the low tide times. Indicate when overtaking, turning or passing and pass on the left. Slow down for pedestrians, wildlife, vehicles and aircraft and beware of humps and creek washouts on the beach.

Inland stay on formed tracks. Most tracks are narrow and two-way so keep a look out for passing bays. Give way to buses and downhill traffic.

Vehicle access permits are required for all vehicles entering Fraser Island.
Camping Permits are also required in advance for camping. Permits may be obtained from River Head Barge landing, at Kingfisher Bay Resort - Fraser Island reception and at Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service offices including Brisbane, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg and Rainbow Beach.
